If you get federal benefit payments by paper check, the U.S. Department of the Treasury wants you to know that by March 1, 2013, you are required to switch to an electronic payment. Don’t worry, it’s easy to make the switch. First, decide whether you want direct deposit or the Direct Express® Debit MasterCard®.  Next, you’ll need to have a copy of your federal benefit check on hand. You will be asked to provide information printed on this check when you make the switch. If you’re signing up for direct deposit, you will also need your bank’s routing number and your bank account number. Now you’re ready to make the switch. You can sign up online at www.GoDirect.org. If you would rather sign up by phone, call 1-800-333-1795. U.S. Treasury customer service agents are standing by to help Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
